The sanctuary owes its existence and recognition to the revered ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali, often hailed as the 'Birdman of India.' During his ornithological survey in Travancore-Cochin, Dr. Salim Ali stumbled upon this captivating patch of evergreen lowland forest on the banks of the Periyar River. Today, in honor of his legacy, the sanctuary is named the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.
